Solomon Henkel, regarding personal and religious life and mentioning religious difficulties in the County which were forcing many Lutherans to leave for the West; letters of B.F. Graves, 7 Aug. 1861 mentioning the Confederate Army at Monterey, Va., and J.S. Pennick 26 Mar. 1863, recounting the difficulties of obtaining an army discharge to return to the ministry, including reported comments on his request by Generals Thomas J. Jackson and Robert E. Lee; and Solomon Henkel's copy of Mirden-Buch, Frankfort, 1566.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
